What Is a Candle Wick? And Why Does It Matter?

What Is a Candle Wick?

A candle wick is the part of the candle that allows the flame to burn.

But it's not actually the wax itself that's burning.

When you light a candle, the heat from the flame melts some of the wax around the wick. The wick then draws that liquid wax upward, where the heat of the flame vaporizes it and allows it to burn. This process is called capillary action.

So yes, that tiny little string in the middle of your candle is doing quite a bit.

The wick is essentially the delivery system that gets the candle's fuel to the flame.

Why Does the Wick Matter?

Not all candle wicks are created equal, and the wick needs to work with the rest of the candle.

The wax, fragrance, vessel, and wick all interact with one another.

The goal is to create a burn where the flame is steady, the wax melts evenly, and the candle performs the way it should.

A wick that's too small may not generate enough heat to create a proper melt pool.

A wick that's too large can produce an overly large flame, excess soot, or excessive heat. 

That's why the wick isn't something I can just pick based on how it looks.

It needs to be tested with the actual candle.

How Does a Candle Wick Work?

The easiest way to think about it is to follow what happens after you light the candle.

First, the flame heats the wax surrounding the wick.

The wax melts into a liquid.

The wick pulls that melted wax upward.

The flame uses the wax as fuel.

As the candle continues to burn, more wax melts and gets pulled toward the flame.

It's a pretty incredible little system when you think about it.

The wick isn't simply sitting there and catching fire. It's constantly helping move the fuel that keeps the flame going.

Does Candle Wick Size Matter?

Very much.

The diameter of the candle, the wax being used, the fragrance, and other elements of the formulation all affect how a wick performs.

That's why there isn't one universal "best candle wick."

A wick that works beautifully in one candle may not be the right choice for another.

The goal is to find the wick that creates the right balance for that particular candle.

When a candle is properly wicked, you want to see a steady flame and an even melt pool that develops across the surface over the course of the burn.

What Happens If a Wick Is Too Small?

One thing you might notice is candle tunneling.

That's when the wax melts primarily around the wick while a significant amount of wax remains around the sides of the candle.

If you've ever looked down at your candle and thought, "Why is it burning straight down the middle?", that's tunneling.

Wick size can be one factor, although burn habits can also contribute.

What Happens If a Wick Is Too Large?

A wick that's too large can create a different set of issues.

You may see a flame that's too tall or flickering excessively, along with more carbon buildup or soot.

The candle may also produce more heat than you want.

This is why bigger isn't automatically better.

A candle wick isn't something where you want to maximize the flame. You want the wick to be properly matched to the candle.

Why Do I Need to Trim My Candle Wick?

Even a properly selected wick needs a little maintenance.

Before burning your candle, I recommend trimming the wick to about ¼ inch.

A properly trimmed wick helps keep the flame at a manageable size and can help reduce excessive mushrooming, soot, and flickering.

And yes, I know trimming the wick every time can feel like one more annoying little candle chore.

But it takes approximately five seconds.

What Is the Mushroom on My Candle Wick?

If you've ever burned a candle and noticed a little dark ball forming at the end of the wick, you've probably seen what candle makers call mushrooming.

It's carbon buildup that can happen as the wick burns.

Some amount of mushrooming can occur depending on the wick construction and the candle itself. Keeping the wick trimmed can help manage it.

So if you see a tiny mushroom after burning your candle, don't immediately panic.

Just let the candle cool completely, trim the wick, and you're ready for the next burn.

Why Candle Makers Test Wicks

This is the part most people don't see when they buy a candle.

A candle maker can't simply decide, "This wick looks right," pour the wax, and call it a day.

The wick needs to be tested with the actual combination of wax, fragrance, vessel, and other ingredients.

That's because changing even one part of the candle can affect how the wick performs. 

That's also why I care so much about testing.

When I'm making a candle, I'm not just thinking about what smells good.

I'm thinking about how the candle actually behaves once you light it.

What Should a Properly Burning Candle Look Like?

While you're burning your candle, you're looking for a few basic things.

The flame should be steady.

The wick should be trimmed.

The wax should gradually melt across the surface rather than immediately creating a deep hole around the wick.

You shouldn't see excessive smoke or soot.

And your candle shouldn't be producing a flame that's wildly oversized or constantly flickering.

A little movement is normal. A candle flame isn't going to sit perfectly still like a tiny statue.

What you're looking for is a controlled, consistent burn.

The Wick Is Small, But It Matters

I think the wick is one of those candle details that's easy to completely overlook.

You see the vessel.

You smell the fragrance.

You notice the wax.

The wick is just sitting there in the middle doing its thing.

But it's one of the most important pieces of the entire candle.

The wick determines how the candle's fuel gets to the flame, and its relationship with the wax, fragrance, and vessel helps determine how the candle burns.

That's why when I make my candles, I'm thinking about the entire system rather than any single ingredient.

A beautiful fragrance is important.

So is the wax.

So is the vessel.

And that little wick in the middle is doing a lot more than it looks like.
