Why Is My Candle Smoking?
If you've ever lit a candle and noticed a little trail of smoke coming from the flame, your first thought might be:
"Is something wrong with my candle?"
Not necessarily.
A candle can produce smoke when the flame isn't burning its fuel cleanly. The most common things to check are the wick, the airflow around the candle, and anything sitting in the wax that shouldn't be there.
The good news is that these are usually pretty easy things to troubleshoot.
Why Is My Candle Producing Black Smoke?
Black smoke is usually soot, which comes from carbon particles that aren't fully burned by the flame.
If you're seeing a steady stream of dark smoke while your candle is actively burning, don't just let it continue.
Extinguish the candle, let it cool completely, and figure out what's throwing the flame off before you light it again.
The first thing I'd check?
The wick.
1. Your Wick May Be Too Long
This is the first thing I would check if my candle started smoking.
As a candle burns, the wick gets longer and can develop carbon buildup at the tip. A longer wick can create a larger, less controlled flame, which can increase smoking and soot.
Before your next burn, let the candle cool completely and trim the wick to about ¼ inch.
Remove the trimmed piece from the wax rather than letting it fall into the melt pool.
It's a tiny step, but it makes a noticeable difference in how the candle burns.
2. Your Candle May Be in a Draft
Candles and drafts are not exactly best friends.
Fans, open windows, air conditioning vents, and other moving air can make the flame flicker and move around.
When the flame isn't stable, the candle may produce more smoke and soot.
If your candle is smoking, take a look at what's happening around it.
Is there a fan nearby?
Is it sitting underneath an air vent?
Is a window open?
Try moving it to a calmer spot before your next burn.
A candle flame should have room to do its little flame thing without fighting the wind.
3. There May Be Something in Your Wax
Look at the melt pool.
If you see wick trimmings, match debris, dust, or anything else floating around in there, remove it once the candle has cooled.
You don't want random pieces of stuff becoming extra fuel for your flame.
This is especially easy to overlook because the wax pool can look perfectly normal from a distance.
Before each burn, I like to make sure the candle is clean and the wick is ready to go.
4. Your Flame May Be Flickering Too Much
A little movement is normal.
A candle flame doesn't need to sit perfectly still.
But if your flame is constantly jumping, leaning, or dancing dramatically, take a look at the environment around your candle.
Moving air is one possibility.
A wick that needs trimming is another.
And if the flame is unusually large, extinguish the candle and let it cool before checking the wick.
The goal isn't a perfectly motionless flame.
It's a steady, controlled burn.
Is Smoke When I Blow Out My Candle Normal?
This is a little different.
If you see a quick puff of smoke immediately after extinguishing your candle, that's not the same thing as a candle continuously smoking while it's burning.
That little plume is the result of the extinguished wick and remaining heat.
So if you're blowing out your candle and seeing a tiny wisp of smoke disappear into the air, you don't necessarily have a smoking candle problem.
What I'd pay attention to is persistent smoke while the candle is actively burning.
That's when I'd stop and troubleshoot.
Why Is There Black Soot on My Candle Jar?
If you're seeing black marks around the inside of your candle jar, that's usually soot from the flame.
The most common thing I'd check first is the wick. When a wick gets too long, the flame can become larger and less controlled, which can contribute to soot. Drafts can also make the flame flicker and produce more soot.
Here's what I'd do:
- Extinguish the candle and let it cool completely.
- Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before your next burn.
- Check for drafts from fans, vents, or open windows and move the candle if needed.
- Remove any debris from the wax before lighting it again.
- Wipe away any soot from the inside of the cooled vessel so you can see whether it comes back.
If the black soot keeps returning after you've addressed the wick and airflow, I'd stop burning the candle rather than continuing to troubleshoot it while it's lit.
What Should I Do If My Candle Keeps Smoking?
If your candle is producing a steady stream of smoke while it's burning, don't ignore it.
Extinguish the candle and let it cool completely. Then check the wick, the area around the candle, and the wax.
Start with the simplest fixes:
Trim the wick to about ¼ inch.
A long wick can create a larger, less controlled flame.
Move the candle away from drafts.
Fans, vents, and open windows can disturb the flame and contribute to smoking.
Remove anything sitting in the wax.
Wick trimmings and other debris don't belong in the melt pool.
Then try your candle again under calmer conditions.
If it continues smoking significantly despite those changes, stop burning it. You shouldn't have to keep adjusting a candle that's consistently producing excessive smoke.
How I Think About a Clean Candle Burn
When I'm making candles, I don't just care about how they look sitting on a shelf.
I care about what happens when you actually light them.
The wick, wax, fragrance, vessel, and burn all need to work together.
That's why testing matters so much to me.
I want the candle to smell good, obviously.
But I also want the experience of lighting it to feel good.
A steady flame.
A clean vessel.
A candle that behaves the way I intended it to.
That's part of the whole product.
The Bottom Line
If your candle is smoking, don't panic.
Start with the simple stuff.
Trim the wick.
Check for drafts.
Remove debris.
Look at the flame.
And if your candle continues producing significant smoke, stop burning it rather than trying to force it to cooperate.
A little candle care goes a long way.
And honestly, I'd rather spend five seconds trimming a wick than spend the rest of the evening wondering why my candle is trying to communicate with me through smoke signals.
